Emissions of most major air pollutants from light duty vehicles in the European Union (EU-27) have decreased considerably since 1990. Levels of nitrogen oxides (NOx) from passenger cars and vans fell more than 65 percent between 1990 and 2021, while sulfur oxide (SOx) emissions decreased by over 99 percent. However, ammonia (NH₃) levels increased 124 percent during this period, while nitrogen dioxide (N₂O) levels grew about 19 percent.
