According to a survey conducted in Japan in July 2023, fanzine otaku on average spent almost 29 thousand Japanese yen per year on their hobby. Fanzines, commonly known as dojinshi in Japan, often feature self-published works of amateur artists. Based on the same survey, the number of otaku in the fanzine segment was estimated at 1.1 million people.
