An internet sweep of 247 businesses across Australia conducted by the ACCC in October 2022 revealed that over 55 percent of the businesses reviewed were making concerning environmental claims. For example, businesses found to be making false, misleading, or unsubstantiated claims about the sustainability of their products raised concerns, as well as businesses that exaggerated their business sustainability and set environmental goals without clear action plans.

Breakdown of businesses swept by the ACCC:
- Food & beverages = 37.
- Takeaway packaging = 40.
- Cosmetics & personal care = 30.
- Textiles, garments & shoes = 27.
- Electronics & home appliances = 37.
- Energy = 25.
- Household & cleaning products = 22.
- Vehicles = 29.
Concerning claims according to the ACCC included:
- Vague or unclear environmental claims.
- Environmental claims with insufficient substantiating evidence.
- Use of absolute claims, e.g., 100% recyclable.
- Exaggerated business sustainability claims, e.g., promoting renewable energy project investment, yet still sourcing products from fossil-fuel based industries.
- Environmental goals set without clear action plans.
- Misleading use of third-party certifications.
