The production capacity of sodium-ion (Na-ion) batteries worldwide amounted to 42 gigawatt-hours in 2023. Approximately 95 percent of the global capacity was located in China, while Europe accounted for the remaining five percent. Na-ion batteries have lower costs than lithium-ion ones and, despite being heavier than them, they are safer, charge faster, and have a longer life-cycle. According to a recent forecast, the total Na-ion battery capacity is expected to increase to 186 gigawatt-hours by 2030.
