Quarterly ROE of the banking industry in Germany 2014-2024

The return on equity (ROE) of the banking industry in Germany showed a fluctuating pattern over the years between 2014 and 2024, ranging from a low of negative 1.6 percent in the first quarter of 2020 to a high of 7.5 percent in the first quarter of 2024. The large drop in the ROE in 2020 was due to the poor economic conditions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. After the initial shock of the pandemic, the ROE of the banking sector stabilized, reaching the highest value in the observed period in the first quarter of 2024.
