In 2024, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the Japanese organization Nihon Hidankyo for its fight against nuclear weapons. The prize is awarded every year in Oslo, Norway in early October to people or organizations who have made substantial efforts in promoting peace around the world. It is often referred to as the most prestigious peace prize worldwide.

Highest number of winners from the U.S.

Particularly in its early decades, the prize was mostly awarded to people from Western nations, reflected in the fact that these countries top the list of prize winners. However, the pattern started to change in the decades after the Second World War, and in recent years, it has been awarded to individuals from Belarus, the Philippines, Ethiopia, and Iraq. A majority of the winners are men, and it has been awarded to organizations on 31 occasions.

Controversies and criticism

Though highly prestigious, the Nobel Peace Prize has received criticism for being political and for being Western-leaning. It has also been criticized for being awarded based on hopes of future changes rather than actual changes made. Specific prize awards have also been controversial, including those granted to Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in 2019, U.S. President Barack Obama in 2009, Rabin, Peres and Arafat in 1994, and Kissinger and Lê Đức Thọ in 1973.
