In 2019, nearly nine percent of women in India contested in the Lok Sabha elections. The share of women contestants in Lok Sabha elections had increased by almost 36 percent since 2009.
In September 2023, Lok Sabha passed a new bill, Women's Reservation, which would reserve one-third of parliament's seats for women in the Lok Sabha and State legislative assemblies in India.
