The global stride towards a greener transport sector has been wide -reaching. From bikes to automobiles, from maritime transport all the way through to rail, the global push for more climate- friendly transport has been a key target for governments and citizens alike. Eco-friendly road- going logistical processes are no exception. With 38 percent of consumers citing environmental concerns as the primary reason for purchasing electronic vehicles, this drive to meet net-zero targets will impact all sectors of the vehicular industry.
The situation today
In 2023, the total electricity demand for truck charging stations only amounted to 1 terawatt-hour per year. However, the forecasts clearly foresee this need to increase steadily between 2024 and 2030, reaching 44 terawatt-hours per year by 2030. This coincides with the projected increase in numbers of electric trucks, across Europe whereby 2030, there will be approximately 562,000 electric trucks active across the continent.
The battle to lower emissions
The CO2 emissions of freight vehicles in 2022, provide an insight into the climate impact of the road haulage industry. Combined, heavy and medium freight vehicles make up a quarter of all emissions released by transport. Despite cars and vans making up the majority of emissions in 2022, the slower decarbonization rate of trucks means the logistics sector still has its part to play in reaching net zero.
