Global total carbon dioxide removal sales 2020-2024

Global sales of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits increased from just 237 metric tons in January 2020 to approximately 11 million metric tons by May 2024. Global CDR sales increased by roughly four million metric tons in May 2024, mainly due to Microsoft's record-breaking purchase of 3.3 million CDR credits from Stockholm Exergi. There was also a significant jump in CDR purchases in May 2023. This increase was also a result of CDR purchases made by Microsoft.
