The consumer confidence index is calculated based on the survey results of 8,400 households (3,024 one-person households and 5,376 households with two or more people) in Japan. The survey is conducted on the 15th of every month online and via mail. Respondents were asked to evaluate their prospects over the next six months on a one-to-five scale of the areas of quality of life, income growth, employment, propensity to durable goods, and asset value. From the responses, the overall index is calculated; seasonal adjustment via X-12-ARIMA. An index value above 50 indicates a positive mood of consumers, a reading below 50 points to a negative assessment.
In the case of figures from February 2025, 5,376 households with two or more members were surveyed, whose response rate was 77.9%.
