In 2022, global direct carbon dioxide emissions from buses increased by 1.1 percent to 452 million metric tons (MtCO₂). Bus transportation accounted for roughly six percent of global transportation CO₂ emissions in 2022. Although bus emissions have increased since plummeting in 2020 due to the outbreak of COVID-19, they remain below pre-pandemic levels. Bus emissions need to drop to below 400 MtCO₂ by 2030 to get on track with the Net Zero Scenario.
