Microsoft is a leading investor in carbon removal technologies, having purchased more than 6.6 million metric tons of CDR to date. In May 2024, Microsoft signed the largest-ever CDR deal with the Swedish energy company Stockholm Exergi for the purchase of 3.3 million metric tons of CDR over 10 years. In May 2023, Microsoft bought 2.76 million tons of CDR from Ørsted, which was the previous world record CDR purchase.
