In 2022, China's silicon production volume was estimated at six million metric tons, by far the largest production volume in the Asia-Pacific region as well as worldwide. That year, the total global production of silicon amounted to an estimated 8.8 million metric tons.
Silicon is particularly important due to its semiconducting properties, with silicon wavers used in the production of integrated circuits that can be found in electronic devices such as smartphones and computers.
