The number of public transport passengers has been on a slow upward trend and is projected to reach 4.49 billion users by 2027. This upward trend was interrupted between 2020 and 2022, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, when user numbers dropped significantly and then began recovering to the pre-pandemic levels.

Data includes local and regional public transportation by road, water, rail, and air; regular transportation by bus, train, tram, subway, suburban trains, ferries, cable car, and trolleybus; all online and offline bookings for public transportation tickets and subscriptions, irrespective of the sales channel; and time-limited subscriptions and single tickets.
Data excludes tickets for long-distance public transportation with nationwide travel offers; private transportation; and freight transportation.
