By 2021, China had acreage dedicated to vegetable production of nearly 22 million hectares. In that year, China produced more than 600 million metric tons of fresh vegetables, nearly half of all global production.
Eating fresh vegetables as a new dietary trend in China
Though vegetables have been widely consumed in China over centuries, according to the country’s dietary and nutrition monitoring report, only 15 percent of Chinese meet the daily recommendation amount of fresh vegetable intake. Nevertheless, with the rise of health consciousness, many Chinese consumers are becoming more aware of the importance of vegetables as a source of fiber and vitamins. After the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak in 2020, more than half of Chinese respondents in a survey said they increased the consumption of fruits and vegetables.
In 2022, the average fresh vegetable consumption per person in China amounted to around 104.8 kilograms, increasing from 106.2 kilograms in 2021.
