In a warming scenario of less than 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial averages, two percent of both terrestrial and marine species would be facing high risk of extinction in biodiversity hotspots, based on 2021 projections. Should warming exceed three degrees Celsius, 20 percent of terrestrial and 32 percent of marine species were projected to be at very high extinction risk.
Share of species at high risk of extinction in terrestrial and marine biodiversity hotspots worldwide as of 2021, by scenario
Based on assessments of more than 2,700 species in biodiversity hotspots. According to the source, biodiversity hotspots are areas exceptionally rich in species, ecologically distinct and/or show high endemism.
The Cross-Chapter Paper 1: Biodiversity Hotspots is part of the contribution of Working Group II to the Sixth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
