In 2022, the Chinese authorities seized 11.7 tons of heroin, methamphetamine, and ketamine in the country, of which 10.9 tons were smuggled from abroad, mostly from Southeast Asia and South America. China has one of the most stringent anti-narcotic laws in the world. Drug smugglers caught carrying more than 50 grams of heroin, methamphetamine, or cocaine into the country can be subject to the death penalty.
