According to a study carried out in China in 2019, it was found that augmented reality-guided lumber pedicle screw placements could be carried out quicker than a radiograph-guided method. The AR-guided operations had a mean time of under 132 seconds compared to 181 seconds for radiograph-guided operations.

80 placements were carried out by AR and 40 carried out with radiography.
The authors of the study stated their objective as "To assess, in a bone-agar experimental setting, the feasibility and accuracy of percutaneous lumbar pedicle screw placements using an intraoperative CT image-based augmented reality (AR)-guided method compared to placements using a radiograph."
