According to a study carried out in China in 2019, it was found that augmented reality-guided lumber pedicle screw placements could be carried out quicker than a radiograph-guided method. The AR-guided operations had a mean time of under 132 seconds compared to 181 seconds for radiograph-guided operations.
Mean time taken for percutaneous lumbar pedicle screw placements guided by augmented reality compared to radiography guided placement in a study conducted in China in 2019
(in seconds)
80 placements were carried out by AR and 40 carried out with radiography.Â
The authors of the study stated their objective as "To assess, in a bone-agar experimental setting, the feasibility and accuracy of percutaneous lumbar pedicle screw placements using an intraoperative CT image-based augmented reality (AR)-guided method compared to placements using a radiograph."
