In 2022, over 4.1 million square kilometers of land mass and over 91 thousand square kilometers of sea country were subjected to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people's rights and interests. The target of the Closing the Gap Strategy of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people maintaining a distinctive cultural, spiritual, physical, and economic relationship with their land and waters is considered to be on track to be achieved in relation to land country, however not in relation to sea country.
