Japan: cashless payment services ownership by method 2022

Contact-type credit cards were the most owned non-cash means of payment in Japan according to a survey conducted in November 2022. Around 82 percent of respondents owned contact-type credit cards, while the share of consumers owning contactless tap to pay credit cards was much lower at 42 percent. Credit cards were followed by electronic money and QR code payment apps, with an ownership rate of 73 percent.

Credit cards (contactless-type):

Credit cards that are held over a terminal when used, such as iD, QUICPay, Visa Touch Payment, Mastercard Contactless, etc. Excluding cards issued on mobile devices.

Electronic money:

Prepaid cards, such as Suica, PASMO, ICOCA, PiTaPa, nimoca, SUGOCA, nanaco, WAON, Rakuten Edy, etc. Excluding cards issued on mobile devices.

QR code payment apps:

Payment method using QR codes or barcodes, such as LINE Pay, PayPay, au pay, d Barai, Rakuten Pay, Merpay, Yucho Pay, etc.

Other prepaid cards:

Card-type payment methods other than credit cards, debit cards and e-money (including cards issued by particular stores or businesses), such as QUO Card, Doutor Value Card, Starbucks Card, etc.

Contactless IC-type mobile payment apps:

Mobile payment method that enables payments by holding a device (smartphones, mobile phones, smartwatches) over a terminal, such as Apple Pay, Google Pay, Osaifu-Keitai, Mobile Suica, etc.
