Between January 1990 and September 2023, freight index expenditures generally increased with only minor fluctuations across the data period. The highest freight spending, as determined by Cass Information Systems, was in June 2022, where freight expenditure hit 4.67 points, over three points more than in January 1990. Major reasons for this increase include the rise in fuel prices, as well as continuing accessibility issues.

Data within the Index includes all domestic freight modes and is derived from 36 million invoices and $44 billion in spend processed by Cass annually on behalf of its client base of hundreds of large shippers.
