In 2023, Ecuador voted in favor of halting oil drilling in an area of the country's Yasuní National Park. It is estimated that the decision will result in a total opportunity cost loss for the country of around 14.7 million U.S. dollars over the following 20 years, from 2023 to 2043. The Amazon country is amongst the largest oil producing countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.
