Illinois was the leading U.S. state based on the number of nuclear power plants in 2023. In that year, the state had six nuclear facilities on its territory. South Carolina and Pennsylvania followed, with four nuclear plants each. In terms of nuclear reactors in the U.S., 11 were located in Illinois, eight in Pennsylvania, and seven in South Carolina.
