As of 2022, iron ore had the most plentiful global reserves out of the minerals that are used in the production of batteries, at approximately 85 billion metric tons of iron content. Nevertheless, iron ore has many uses beyond batteries. Lithium, a very important material for battery production with up to half of its consumption attributed to that purpose, had much lower global reserves that year, amounting to approximately 26 million metric tons.
Reserves of battery minerals worldwide in 2023, by type
(in million metric tons)
Includes minerals typically used to create batteries. The reserves outlined in this statistic refer to global total production volumes, and do not refer to volumes earmarked to be used specifically for battery production.
Supplementary notes
* Iron content. ** Ilmenite and rutile reserves combined. *** Greater than 130 million metric tons, but not specified by the source. All figures are rounded. Although cadmium and silicon are used to produce batteries, reserve figures for these minerals have not been included because the source did not provide figures.
