In 2023, a total of 12 people across Venezuela lost their lives due to climate change-related disasters. This represented a decrease when compared to the previous year, down from 140 people. Since 1993, figures reached a record high in 1999, when a total of 30,000 people died due to storms, floods, fires and other natural disasters related to climate change. In December that year, torrential rains in the northern state of La Guaira – known as Vargas State until 2019 – caused flooding and debris flows that killed thousands of people – what is known as the Vargas tragedy.
