Though assets on the balance sheet of the Federal Reserve System decreased in 2022, it remained the largest central bank in the world, with the total value of assets exceeding 8.57 trillion U.S. dollars. The assets of Japan's central bank also dropped, allowing People's Bank of China to come in second place, with assets worth more than six trillion U.S. dollars. This statistic is based on the largest central banks by total assets in 2022. Figures for 2022 were calculated by Statista using figures published by each central bank. Figures were converted from original currencies to U.S. dollars based on exchange rates on December 31, 2022.
