Asia had the largest average carbon factor worldwide in 2023, emitting 2.76 metric tons of carbon dioxide per metric ton of oil equivalent energy consumed (tCO₂/toe). The Pacific region followed closely, with an average of 2.43 tCO₂/toe. Africa and Latin America had the lowest carbon factors in 2022, with both regions emitting less than two tCO₂/toe. Most regions have reduced their carbon factors over the past two decades as many countries have shifted towards cleaner energy sources.
