The mining and metals company BHP's total greenhouse gas emissions were 387 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO₂e) in FY 2024. BHP's direct emissions from operations (Scope 1) were just over eight MtCO₂e, while the company's indirect emissions across the value chain (Scope 3) were estimated at 377.6 MtCO₂e. Scope 3 emissions represent more than 97 percent of BHP's total emissions, and are primarily related to iron ore processing to crude steel.
BHP aims to cut operational GHG emissions by at least 30 percent below FY 2020 levels by FY 2030, and achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
