Direct nitrous oxide (N₂O) emissions accounted for roughly 64 percent of global emissions associated with mineral nitrogen fertilizer use in 2019, at 461 MtCO₂e. Indirect N₂O emissions from leaching and runoff were the second-largest source of emissions from nitrogen fertilizer use. In total, in-field greenhouse gas emissions associated with mineral nitrogen fertilizer use worldwide were estimated at 717 MtCO₂e.
