It is estimated that the global food system produced the equivalent of 16.5 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide in 2019, representing some 31 percent of total GHG emissions from human-activities. Farm-gate activities are the biggest overall contributor to food system emissions, with 5.9 GtCO₂e. Meanwhile, pre-and post production activities, such as food waste and fertilizer manufacturing, were responsible for a similar amount of emissions, at 5.8 GtCO₂e.
