In Portugal, the number of marriages decreased from 2010 to 2023, with the most pronounced drop taking place in 2020 when the total number of marriages registered in the country was almost 18,500. In 2023, marriages increased to almost 36,000, with the majority of them happening between people of different sexes. Same-sex marriages amounted to just 1,000 in the same year, the highest value registered since it was legalized.
