This represented an increase when compared to the previous year, up from approximately 35,400 million people. Since the turn of the century, figures reached a record high in 2008, when a total of 289,000 people were directly affected by storms, floods, fires and other natural disasters related to climate change. That year, continuous heavy rain caused massive flooding in several Ecuadorian provinces, resulting in widespread damage across the country.
