In 2023, a total of eight million people across Latin America and the Caribbean were directly affected by climate change-related disasters. This represented an increase when compared to the previous year, slightly up from approximately 7.9 million people. Since 1990, figures reached a record high in 2014, when a total of 32.2 million people were directly affected by storms, floods, fires and other natural disasters related to climate change. That year, heavy rains affected several regions of Latin America and the Caribbean, causing floods, river overflows and landslides that affected a large number of people.
