Cement accounted for roughly 4.5 percent of global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by fossil fuels in 2021. That percentage has increased a lot in the past decades. While cement was responsible for 2.18 percent of all fossil fuel emissions in 1991, that figure peaked at 4.64 percent in 2020. Nevertheless, most of those global CO2 emissions came from coal, oil, and gas.
