From 2019 to 2023 the level of support for further countries joining the European Union rose from around 45 percent in 2019 to over 50 percent in 2022 and 2023, with a high point of 57 percent in favour in quarter one of 2022. The suddent increase in the share of respondents in favor of the expansion of the EU in 2022 is likely due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February of that year, to which the EU responded by granting Ukraine candidacy status.
