Get in touch with us nowIndia's electricity generation has increased steadily over the past decades, having dropped only in 2020 during the global health crisis. In 2023, the country's electricity production amounted to more than 1,968 terawatt-hours, mostly coming from fossil-fueled power plants. About two decades ago, India generated approximately 600 terawatt-hours of electricity.
Thermal power is India's leading electricity generation source, followed by hydro and nuclear power. Although thermal power can be produced using renewable sources, India's installed thermal energy capacity heavily depends on fossil fuels, specifically coal. Nevertheless, the government aims to increase the use of clean energy sources, and hydro and nuclear sources have experienced an upward trend since 2006.
The distribution of electricity consumption across India is diverse; however, the industry sector accounts for the highest share. Likewise, the domestic and agricultural factions represent other significant sectors in terms of energy consumption.
