In Portugal, in 2022, cash was the most used payment method in terms of the number of transactions at points of sale (POS), being used in 64 percent of payment instances. Card payment was used at a share of 31 percent. However, when it came to the value of transactions at POS, card payments had a superior value, as 48 percent of the transacted value was due to bank cards over 44 percent of cash payments. This signifies that the amount spent in card transactions was superior to the amount spent in cash.
