In 2023, container ships accounted for almost 30 percent of carbon dioxide emissions from maritime transportation entering and leaving European Economic Area (EEA) ports. Combined, container ships, bulk carriers, and oil tankers were responsible for more than half of the EU MRV fleet's total emissions in 2023. The most polluting vessel in Europe that year was the Superfast Xi, followed by Cruise Roma and Cruise Barcelona.
Distribution of carbon dioxide emissions from ships within EU MRV scope in Europe in 2023, by ship type
Based on emissions of 123.3 million metric tons carbon dioxide
Supplementary notes
Based on emissions of the EU MRV fleet. EU-MRV is an EU regulation on the monitoring, reporting, and verification of carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions from maritime transport entering and leaving European Economic Area (EEA) ports when transporting goods or passengers for commercial purposes. For example, EU-MRV covers emissions from a ship that goes from Rotterdam to Shanghai and the emissions produced when a ship sails from Shanghai to Rotterdam. However, this excludes emissions if a ship makes a stop at another port outside the EEA for cargo or passenger operations. In this scenario, only emissions from the last leg will be reported.
