Best-selling battery-electric car manufacturers in Europe 2022
The Volkswagen Group was the leading car manufacturer in Europe based on new battery-electric vehicle registrations recorded in 2022. That year, over 349,100 new BEVs were from one of the Volkswagen Group's brands. In contrast, the American EV giant Tesla ranked second.
Competition in the global market
Despite its second place in the best-selling battery-electric car manufacturer rankinh, Tesla produced the two best-selling fully electric vehicle models in Europe in 2022. The brand recorded some 137,000 and 91,500 sales of its Model Y and Model 3, respectively. However, Tesla's performance in the global plug-in electric vehicle market, which includes plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, has been challenged by BYD. In 2022, the Chinese manufacturer overtook Tesla in both electric vehicle production volume and electric vehicle sales.

However, despite this sharp market growth, fossil fuel vehicles remained the best-selling fuel type for new cars in many European countries. Norway, the notable exception, reported a share of 79.3 percent of its new car sales were battery-electric. However, the country has shifted its electric vehicle buying incentives in January 2023, in an effort to promote active mobility.
