In a survey conducted in 2023 among New Zealanders on their views of tourism, the top perceived positive impact of tourism on the country's economy was the growth opportunities for businesses created by the industry, with just shy of nine in 10 participants indicating this. The top perceived positive societal impact of the tourism industry among respondents was that the industry adds to the vitality of New Zealand's regions and local communities.

Participants were asked about their perception of the environmental impacts of tourism using a five point scale where 1 = strongly disagree and 5 = strongly agree. Only responses indicating strong disagreement (1) and disagreement (2) are represented in this dataset.
