Carbon budget overshoot by largest emitters worldwide 2050
In a scenario in which the world achieves net-zero by 2050, it is estimated that many countries will exceeded their fair-share of the global carbon budget, based on their relative population. The United States is expected to be the largest overshooting country in this scenario, accounting for 42 percent of carbon budget overshoot. Russia is forecast to follow, but by a wide margin, with a share of almost 10 percent. The cumulative compensation owed from carbon overshooting countries to undershooting countries was evaluated at 192 trillion U.S. dollars.
