In a survey conducted in 2023 among New Zealanders on their views of tourism, around one-quarter of respondents agreed that international tourism had a very positive or somewhat positive impact on the country's environment. Around 30 percent of those surveyed said international tourism had a very negative or somewhat negative impact on the environment. In comparison, domestic tourism was viewed as more environmentally positive, with around two-fifths of respondents stating that domestic tourism had a very positive or somewhat positive impact.
