Innovation expenditure in this industry includes research and development, as well as innovation-related spending on tangible assets, intangible assets, continued education, marketing, conception, construction, design, production preparation and distribution planning.

According to the source, the German innovation survey is carried out by the Leibniz Center for European Economic Research on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research from 1993 in cooperation with infas (infas Insitute for Applied Social Science) and the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research. The survey is aimed at all companies in Germany with at least five employees and one economic focus in the industries listed. Definitions and evaluation concepts correspond with international OECD and Eurostat standards. The innovation survey takes place every two years and is part of a European survey conducted by Eurostat (Community Innovation Survey - CIS). All figures projected on total company samples starting from five employees in Germany. Around 16,400 companies took part in the survey in 2022 (54 percent of the sample size), among them 184 from the clothing and leather industry.
