While battery-electric vehicles have a higher initial investment, they also have share of lower running costs and the smallest share for energy costs compared to other fuel types, at only 15 percent of total expenses.

The source specifies its index includes different costs involved in car ownership in each country such as energy/fuel, depreciation, tax, interest, insurance and maintenance. The sources uses an annual mileage assumption of 30,000 kilometers, averaging costs over the first four years of ownership.
The datapoints for the share of road tax in the total cost of ownership of battery-electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles were calculated by Statista.
