In Germany, the average total cost of driving a mid-size premium plug-in hybrid car was higher than driving other cars in this segment, at around 1,459 euros in 2022. Conversely, owning a mid-size premium petrol car was the cheapest compared to battery-electric, diesel, and plug-in hybrid vehicles, costing approximately 1,339 euros.

The Car Cost Index includes different costs involved in car ownership in each country such as energy/fuel, depreciation, tax, interest, insurance and maintenance. In this report, using an annual mileage assumption of 30,000 km, costs are averaged over the first four years of ownership.
