Japanese consumers were divided on their intention to try fermentation-based meat alternatives. As revealed in a survey conducted in April 2023 in Japan, close to 45 percent of respondents showed at least some intention to eat meat alternatives made through fermentation, whereas around 55 percent did not want to try such products.
Fermentation-based meat alternatives use live microbes to produce alternative proteins through traditional, biomass, or precision fermentation to reproduce the taste and texture of animal derived proteins. However, fermentation based meat alternatives are not actively commercialized in Japan.
