Extreme drought in the Southwestern United States has affected California's largest reservoirs in recent years. Water levels in Lake Shasta, the largest reservoir in the state, were at just 38 and 39 percent of total capacity on July 1, 2021 and July 1, 2022, respectively. By comparison, the lake was at 95 percent capacity on the same date in 2019. California's second-largest reservoir, Lake Oroville, also saw water levels plummet in 2021, at just 32 percent capacity on July 1. However, many reservoirs were replenished in spring 2023 due to heavy rain and melting snowpack, with both Shasta and Oroville nearing 100 percent.
