Furthermore, the country's score was relatively stable between 2000 and 2020, ranging between 11 and 12 points. The drop in 2021 corresponds to pro-democracy protests starting in May 2021, which the government faced with a crackdown. GxR ranks countries based on the openness of the society, with a higher score being given to countries with more freedom of expression.

In 161 countries, 25 indicators were used to create an overall freedom of expression score for every country, on a scale of 1 to 100 which places it in an expression category.
