In 2023, Guinea scored 20 points in the Global Expression Report (GxR), the lowest since 2000. Furthermore, the openness of the society and freedom of speech was highest between 2010 and 2019, fluctuating between 32 and 36 points. In 2020, the then president, Alpha Condé, passed through changes to the constitution, after a referendum to allow him to stay in power for a third term. In 2021, the military arrested him and took power in a coup d'état. GxR ranks countries based on the openness of the society, with a higher score being given to countries with more freedom of expression.

The source adds the following information regarding the metric: The Global Expression Report’s metric (the GxR Metric) tracks freedom of expression across the world. In 161 countries, 25 indicators were used to create an overall freedom of expression score for every country, on a scale of 1 to 100 which places it in an expression category.
