Since 2000, the freedom of speech in the country followed a decreasing trend. For instance, the country received its highest score in 2005 and 2006 at 34 points, while it was lowest in 2017 at five points. GxR ranks countries based on the openness of the society, with a higher score being given to countries with more freedom of expression.

The source adds the following information regarding the metric: The Global Expression Report’s metric (the GxR Metric) tracks freedom of expression across the world. In 161 countries, 25 indicators were used to create an overall freedom of expression score for every country, on a scale of 1 to 100 which places it in an expression category.
